A Perfect Wedding ReceptionBack to Directory

Little girls dream of a picture perfect fairytale wedding. And though things don't always go as planned as we grow up, there are things you can do that will help your perfect wedding day become a reality.

Though you can never be assured that your wedding reception will go off without a hitch, these tips will help you avoid some common problems.

Double-check with your wedding vendors the morning of your reception. The bride doesn't have to do this herself, she can ask her mother or maid-of-honor to do it. However it should be done. Make sure that each vendor knows the proper place and time. Arrange for someone to meet the vendors at the reception site if necessary.

Don't arrive late to your wedding reception. Even if you are taking photos at the ceremony site before heading to the reception, do it quickly. Wedding guests normally don't start eating until the bride and groom arrive. Therefore, it's rude to make your guests wait for a long period of time. Be sure to serve appetizers and cocktails as your guests wait for the bride and groom to arrive.

Make sure the kids have plenty to do. Children (especially toddlers) have a short attention span. Wedding receptions can get boring for young kids. Set up a special area at the reception site where kids can play with games and toys. Ask a teenage family member or two to oversee the children's area, or pay a sitter to watch over the kids.

Don't have a cash bar. Even if you want to save money, a cash bar isn't the way to go. Most of your guests will consider it tacky. Instead, you can offer just a couple signature drinks or wine only, instead of a full bar. See if you can buy the alcohol separately and bring it to the reception site. If you shop around at superstores and liquor barns, you should be able to find affordable options.

Thank all of your guests for being part of your wedding day. If you don't have a receiving line, walk around the reception and take time out to thank each person for coming.

Don't skip the wedding favors. Sometimes couples skip the favors to save a few bucks. Though wedding favors aren't expensive, every wedding should have them. Favors act as a small token of thanks to your guests.

Don't drink too much. Nothing is more obnoxious than the bride or groom getting too drunk at the reception. Be sure to eat food throughout the day so that you aren't drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. Limit yourself to 2-3 drinks at your reception. Save the partying for your honeymoon.
